Background
Research was undertaken for 6 months prior to the Com.unity Choir being launched, which evidenced the need for an innovative musical group to be initiated, especially for local people who for a range of reasons are potentially socially excluded. The Com.unity Choir was formed in April 2004 to meet this need, and has been fortunate to have been sponsored by Hertswood Specialist Arts College.
A unique opportunity
Most members have no previous singing experience or musical knowledge, and would therefore not be eligible to join other local traditional choirs. People who have always been keen to sing for pleasure, are able to join Com.unity without auditions or the need to read music. Members learn through a newly-devised way of teaching, which enables them to self-select which voice group most suits their singing range.
Repertoire A varied repertoire has been developed and includes a wide range of powerful ballads and popular upbeat songs with uplifting, universal themes, carefully selected to convey positive messages about; Life, Friendship, Unity, Hope, Courage and Peace.
Performances For the last 3 years the Choir has been in great demand to perform at statutory and community events, interfaith servces and cultural festivals across London and Hertfordshire.
